Meet Celeste Malvar-Stewart, a Columbus-based sustainable fashion and textile artist also known as MALVAR=STEWART!
Celeste is especially mindful of the environmental impact of her work at each stage in its creation. Every piece she creates features fibre from humanely-raised Ohio sheep and alpaca. She frequently upcycles salvaged items like post-consumer denim, too. Her experience as an American Filipino influences her designs, exploring Filipino fashion and her experiences with assimilation and American culture.
“I believe that the energy from happy sheep and alpacas is somehow embued in the pieces, and subsequently felt by us when we wear them,” she says of her textiles. “Since I create my textiles as I create the pieces themselves, I am able to have seamless designs that move our eyes 360 degrees around the body, where every aspect has been mindfully envisioned. After all, it is our whole selves that make us unique.”
We’re honored to share Celeste’s work as part of our #HungryArtists program. Celeste, thank you so much for sharing your talent and passion for conscious design with us. Visit her website here or follow her on IG @malvarstewart!
